El museo más grande y más antiguo checo, fundado el año 1818, tiene su sede en el destacado edificio del estilo neo-renacentista de los años 1885-1890 que domina la Plaza de Venceslao. En el interior impresiona la rica decoración en mármol. Las colecciones que guarda están dedicadas principalmente a mineralogía, arquología, antropología e historia natural. El Museo tiene también un panteón con bustos y estatuas de sabios checos, artistas y escritores. Está decorado con muchas pinturas históricas.
